Origin information: Near Fishguard, Pembrokeshire, England. Graduate of Trinity College Dublin.

Period of service: In 1845, whilst a Divinity student at Trinity College Dublin, Bowen was approached to apply for the post of missionary to join Allen Gardiner and Robert Hunt. Due to the changing circumstances of the Society and mission prospects, he did not apply. Bowen did, however, go on to become Bishop of Sierra Leone and remained involved as one of the early Vice-Patrons of the Society.
